Using web maps powered by Hosted Feature Services you can rapidly deploy field collection schemas to the field for use with Collector for ArcGIS. You can publish map layers directly from ArcMap that have awesome templates with great forms that include pick lists just the way you modeled them in the geodatabase.
But no matter how much of a GIS rock star you are, you won’t get that schema 100% right the first time. So what do you do when you miss a domain value, template or you misspell a field alias? Your field team is out there, collecting stuff. You can’t republish the service!
Well did you know that you can update the schema without having to republish? It’s true. You can add a domain value, remove a template, update the alias for a field.
Here is a document that shows you How to Update Hosted Feature Service Schemas.
Last night we updated the Operations Dashboard for ArcGIS. Yes, it was a stealthy update that happened to the browser app that is hosted inside of ArcGIS Online. Though a minor, bug fix update, it was strategic.
The Browser app now supports labels that you add to layers in your web map, we have replaced the graphics library used for charting and graphing widgets to improve clarity and readability, we addressed several minor stability updates with the Dashboard heartbeat and improved popup support within dynamic map services.
The best news – you don’t need to do anything to pick up these updates! Enjoy!

If you have encountered this, then read on because there is a setting in Collector that you really need to know about… Continue reading
Late breaking news! The apps team just released an update to the Operations Dashboard for ArcGIS! Version 10.2.2 is available for right now and you can download the Windows Dashboard here.
We have added support for opening and viewing operation views within in a Browser so now the same real-time view of operations is available on your iPad or Android tablet as well as your Windows desktop. For more details, read this blog post or even better, take a look at our new doc!
NOTE: Portal for ArcGIS customers will be able to download the Windows app deployment utility from the customer care site late next week but will need to wait for the Browser app to be rolled out this summer.
With the 10.2.2 release of Collector for ArcGIS in March you will be able to use maps on your smartphone or tablet when disconnected from the network. We started blogging about this last month by discussing how you will be able to download maps to your device. In this article we want to discuss feature services, the flow of data, and synchronizing edits. Continue reading

Implementing mobile solutions that target the needs of your field workforce, that leverage your investment in the ArcGIS platform, and are available on the most modern and cost effective device platforms is critical when defining your mobile strategy.
Location is important and depending upon what you are mapping, locational accuracy can make or break a GIS. When considering the use of smartphone and tablet platforms one of the first questions you may ask is – how accurate is the GPS?? The answer to this question will shape the decision you make on device platforms. Or will it?? Continue reading
