What’s New in ArcGIS Maps for Power BI (May 2017)

We continue to update Maps for Power BI on a nearly monthly update cycle, and this month we bring interactive drive times, a new tooltip field well, and localized support for many languages.

Drive time areas

When you want to know how many customers / constituents / Power BI data points are within a short drive from your store / polling place /  important location, create and use a drive time area. Drive time areas are persisted on the map, so they can be used as a persistent ‘cookie cutter’ to make selections within your current Power BI dataset. Drive time areas pair very nicely with pins, which also persist on the map and can be used to show important locations.

Tooltip field well

When you want to add more information to the tool tips that appear when you hover over locations, drag fields into the new tooltip field well.

And more!

We’ve added localization support for many languages, we’ve added some more symbols you can use to represent your mapped locations, and we’ve fixed a bunch of bugs. To see the full list, head over to the documentation site.

If you still haven’t enabled the ArcGIS Maps for Power BI preview feature in Power BI, check out this video to learn how to get started.

Does the drive time capability require ArcGIS Online account?

When will connecting to secured AGO services be supported?

    • Scott Ball says:

Our focus right now is on the core capabilities within the free ArcGIS Maps for Power BI visual, and getting it out of preview and into general availability. We have not announced future plans or capabilities of the visual.

Is it possible to set a pin and drive time dynamically: in Power BI I want to set the pin and drivetime based on a field in my dataset.

    • Scott Ball says:

You can create drive times based on your Power BI data, but it’s not something that happens dynamically. You will have to enter edit mode, open the drive time tool, and manually select the points from your Power BI data.
      Cheers,
      Scott

    Hi,
I have developed and published few sample Power BI Reports and Dashboards integrating the ESRI map (june 2017) , It works fine. But when I have tried to published them embedded in a SharePoint Portal as a Dashboard, every widgets (tables, graphs, ..) works excep the ESRI map widget :-(

Is this a know issue to ESRI support ?

    • Scott Ball says:

Hi – at this time publish-to-web and embedded dashboards are not supported in the ArcGIS Maps for Power BI visual. We are working with Microsoft to enable these capabilities but we do not have an ETA to provide at this time.
