What’s New in Esri Demographics (December 2016)

The December 2016 ArcGIS Online release contains demographic updates for several countries. Follow the links below to read more:

2016 Environics Analytics data for Canada
The Canadian update includes Census, 5 year historic, current year, 3 year projected, 5 year projected, and 10 year projected demographics, as well as current year updates for daytime population, household spending, and PRIZM5 segmentation data. The data are available in the Living Atlas, in the Business Analyst and Community Analyst web apps, and in the ArcGIS Online GeoEnrichment Service and any apps that access the service. A complete attribute list and variable change lists can be found on the documentation pages. Attribute names have changed significantly from the previous release in the DemoStats, Daytime Population, and Household spending datasets.

2016 Retail MarketPlace (Release 2) for the U.S.
This release incorporates a newer NAICS classification system. As a result, Full Service Restaurants (NAICS 7221) and Limited Service Eating Places (NAICS 7222) were removed and replaced with Restaurants/Other Eating Places (NAICS 7225). In addition, the description for Sports/Hobby/Book/Music Stores (NAICS 451) was changed to Sports/Hobby/Music/Book Stores (NAICS 451) and the description for Book/Periodical/Music Stores (NAICS 4512) was changed to Book Stores & News Dealers (NAICS 4512). The data are available in the Living Atlas, in the Business Analyst and Community Analyst web apps, and in the ArcGIS Online GeoEnrichment Service and any apps that access the service. 2016 Daytime Population for the U.S.
Daytime Population is a new data offering from Esri that estimates the number of workers and residents in an area during the day. It provides insight into an area’s day part population expansion or contraction. Learn more in the Explore Daytime Population Story Map. The data are available in the Business Analyst and Community Analyst web apps, and in the ArcGIS Online GeoEnrichment Service and any apps that access the service. Daytime Population data include a total daytime population as well as total daytime “workers” and total daytime “residents”. Data are available in two of Esri’s standard reports: Market Profile and Community Profile. The Daytime Population methodology can be found on the documentation pages.

2016 Crime for the U.S.
This release incorporates the 2016B release from Applied Geographic Solutions (AGS). The data are available in the Living Atlas and in the Business Analyst and Community Analyst web apps for mapping. Learn more about the data on the documentation pages.

2015 MBR data for 14 European countries
Fourteen (14) countries have been updated with the 2015 MBR data. In addition to the vintage update, some countries have new attributes and new levels of geography, and some countries have attributes that are no longer available:

  • Vintage update from 2013 to 2015: Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Russia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, UK
  • New attributes: Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Russia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, UK
  • Attributes no longer available: Finland, Germany, Switzerland
  • Reorganization of Education data (removals and adds): Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France
  • New levels of geography added: Denmark, France, Netherlands, Norway
  • Levels of geography no longer available: Poland, Sweden

How will these updates affect me?

For the Ready-to-Use Living Atlas Maps User within ArcGIS Online
56 international demographic layers and maps are updated.

For the Business Analyst and Community Analyst User
Business Analyst and Community Analyst users can access the updated data through reports and maps. The complete attribute list for each country is accessible through the data browser contained in the application.

For the Data Enrichment user in ArcGIS Online or ArcGIS Maps for Office
The December 2016 update provides access to the datasets shown above. For a detailed explanation of new or deleted attributes in datasets, see the Release Notes for each individual country available on the Esri Demographics documentation pages.

For the Developer using REST endpoints for Standard Global Demographics & Lifestyle Map Services
The REST endpoints for Standard Global Demographics & Lifestyle Map Services were updated in December 2016. These changes will impact any application consuming these services. Some of the changes to the underlying REST endpoints included in this release are:
1. Changes to the layer IDs.
2. Changes to layer names.
3. Changes to attribute field names, IDs, and aliases including additions and deletions.

Because of updates to the underlying data, users of the Demographics & Lifestyle Map Services may need to update these items in the query parameters of REST requests to the service from their apps. To view the updated map service REST endpoints, you will need to access the REST API with a developer or organizational account, using a token request.

For the Developer using the REST endpoints of the GeoEnrichment Service
The underlying datasets of the REST endpoints of the GeoEnrichment Service were updated in December 2016. Some of the changes to the REST endpoints included in this release are:
1. Changes to the layer IDs of the administrative/statistical boundaries.
2. Changes to the layer names of the administrative/statistical boundaries.
3. Changes to attributes/analysis variables including additions and deletions.

Because of updates to the underlying data, users of the GeoEnrichment Service may need to update these items in the query parameters of REST requests to the service from their apps. To view the updated REST endpoints, you will need to access the GeoEnrichment Service with a developer or organizational account, using a token request.
