We are pleased to introduce the 2010 UC Web Map and Routing Application. This map is designed to ease the potentially exhausting experience of navigating the huge San Diego Convention Center.
The application has two main features — a set of multi-scale basemaps and a room and route finder. To find a room start typing any part of the room name, select the one you want from the list, then click the Find Room button. Add a destination room the same way and click Find Route to see the fastest path between the rooms. Along with the route, you’ll learn the distance and approximate travel time. The application can also be set to find wheelchair-accessible routes.
Behind the scenes, this application is built using several map services and a geoprocessing service that leverages a 3D network dataset; all served by ArcGIS Server 10. The application itself was built using the Esri Flex API; this included processing and drawing the routes that were returned by the geoprocessing service. The 3D network dataset was hand-drawn to meet our high cartographic standards. The routes were designed to represent the way people walk so you won’t see a path that looks like a set of dehumanized network edges. We used the Esri World Topographic map as the basemap — this is available for use from ArcGIS.com.
