DesktopIndexingService.exe Error Message when using ArcGIS 10 on Windows 7 or Windows 2008

When using ArcGIS Desktop 10 on Windows 7 or Windows 2008, you may get the following error when creating a search index (either manually or if you have turned on automatic re-indexing):

This issue is caused by a conflict with the Raster To Video Geoprocessing tool in ArcGIS Desktop and the Apple QuickTime Player version 7.6.6. For updates on the status, you can use bug number NIM055479. Esri is actively working on a solution to this issue. In the meantime, please use one of the following workarounds:

Workaround #1:

Despite the error message, ArcGIS will not crash, and the indexing will complete successfully. Therefore the error message can be dismissed and ignored. Optionally, you can set the indexing recurrence to a larger time interval from the Index/Search Options dialog box in the Search Window. That way, the error will not pop up as frequently.

Workaround #2:

Uninstall Apple QuickTime 7.6.6. Optionally, install an older version of QuickTime. Version 7.6.2 will not conflict with ArcGIS Desktop.

Sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused. Please leave any comments in the comment section below this blog post. NOTE: You must be logged in to your Esri Global Account to leave comments.

    Thanks Jeff

I’m seeing this problem on Vista SP2 as well. I think I can probably do without QuickTime for now so will try uninstalling that. Hopefully, it won’t mess up iTunes which I only use for backing up my iPhone.

Looks like iTunes needs QuickTime so have just installed QuickTime 7.6.7. The DesktopIndexingService.exe has stopped working error still occurs but I’ll ignore it and set indexing to be less frequent as per your Workaround #1.

I have Window XP SP3 and also had this error. Even after I uninstalled Quicktime from my computer, I still got the error message. I had to manually remove the desktop indexing service as a scheduled task on my computer.

We have the exact same issue on Vista computers and Quicktime 7.5.5…

XPsp3 with Desktop 10 sp1 is giving same problem and is preceeded by the service consuming >30% of cpu; and it further seems (tbc) to cause anti-malware to go into overdrive – consuming another 40% of cpu: result is machine effectively stops. I have stopped indexing.

Has anyone seen a solution? I am also having the error and I am using with XPsp3 with Desktop sp1.

I’m running XPsp3 with ArcGIS Desktop 10 SP2, and I am still getting an DesktopIndexingService.exe error – The instruction at “0x7c90100b” referenced memory at “0x1a7f0d44″. The memory could not be “read”.

I have the same problem with an standalone application with AO in ArcGIS 10 sp2. Despite the error message, ArcGIS do not crash, and completes the task successfully. I don’t know if it has something to do with this blog, but we detect that the error comes from this code:
ESRI.ArcGIS.Geoprocessor.Geoprocessor geoProcessor = new Geoprocessor(); and the error doesnt raise in debug.

It works perfectly in Arcgis 10 SP0 but the error raises with arcgis10 sp2 in release.
Perhaps, it has something to do with the indexingservice error. We haven’t solved ours.
    Thank you

Running XP SP3 and I’m having the same problem. I don’t think it affected anything.

  13. gcarpenter says:

This has been ongoing for months now, (Vista, SP2). Main problem is will eat my memory up to 89%. Now getting a different popup related to not being able to find a file through ArcGIS Indexing.

  14. gcarpenter says:

…and I seem to be the only GISer among local colleagues that gets either popup for the two different errors.

  15. zapper says:

I see this is still not fixed in 10.1PR. And this without even having Quicktime installed.

  16. suzannmk says:

I am getting the error message and I have Windows Vista Home Premium Edition. I changed the indexing options to 120 minutes from 60 minutes and that has seemed to have solved it (for now).

    Hi,

My name is Braulio, from Chile.
I found this problem in ArcGIS 10.1 SP1, with Windows 7 64 bit system … you could recommend?

I have read in the forums and in the 10.0 version says to uninstall Quick Time Player, but here there is no Quicktime PC.

    I can do?
