The Increasing Diversity of the U.S. Population

One of the biggest trends, as revealed by the Census 2010 data, is the increasing diversity of the U.S. population.

The 2010 Census allowed the reporting of six race categories and any combination of the six, as well as Hispanic or Latino ethnicity.  As these many groups change over time, it is important to be able to track the change as a whole.  To accomplish this, Esri created a proprietary Diversity Index. The Diversity Index is measured on a scale of 0 to 100 and defined as the likelihood that two persons, chosen at random from the same area, belong to different race or ethnic groups. If an area’s entire population belongs to one race group and one ethnic group, then an area has zero diversity. An area’s diversity index increases to 100 when the population is evenly divided into two or more race/ethnic groups. It is important to note Continue reading

Get the Census 2010 Data & Report

Census 2010 data and report are now available to Business Analyst Desktop users using the online access capabilities built into Business Analyst 10. All you need to do is download and install the Census 2010 Online Access patch.

Once you’ve done that… launch Business Analyst and go to Preferences. Click on the ‘Online’ tab and make sure that your BAO credentials are entered and that you’ve checked the online options on. You’ll see a new option Continue reading

Esri has officially released Census 2010 data in Community Analyst.  This release of the Census 2010 Redistricting data includes Total Population, Race and Hispanic Origin, Population Age 18 years or older, and Housing Units (Occupied and Vacant). The Census 2010 data is available immediately from Esri in reporting, dynamic color-coded maps, Smart Map Search, and in geographies not available from the Census Bureau in 2010 geographic boundaries.

Where is the Census 2010 Mean Center of Population?

Or more importantly…what is the mean center of population?

The Census 2010 count of the population in the United States on April 1, 2010 was 308,745,538.  The mean center of population is the exact location on a flat, rigid map of United States would balance perfectly if all 308,745,538 residents were of identical weight.
