Developer Summit 2012 recap – Silverlight, SharePoint, Office, & Windows Phone
It was great to see all of you at this year’s Developer Summit! Hopefully you were able to come by the Islands, Meet the Teams, or attend a Technical Workshop and chat with one of us:

We received lots of good feedback from you this year, and we are pleased to announce that v3.0 Final of the ArcGIS API for Silverlight will support development with both Silverlight 4 and Silverlight 5!
In addition to talking with you about your work and getting feedback, one of our goals every year at the Developer Summit is to provide Technical Workshops with valuable information, best practices, and samples that you can take back with you. If you attended the Developer Summit but missed any of the Silverlight/SharePoint/Windows Phone presentations, or were unable to attend and would like the info, here are a few links you may find of interest:

Flex recap of 2012 Developer Summit

What’s going on with Flex at Esri?
The Flex Team at Esri is growing and doing great. In the last few months we’ve added three new team members. For more information about Flex at Esri and Adobe, please read the following posts.
- Some thoughts on the direction of the ArcGIS web mapping APIs (JavaScript, Flex, and Silverlight) [Esri]
- Adobe’s view of Flex and its commitments to Flex in the future [Adobe]

Mobile
I’m always surprised by the number of people that don’t know that you can use the Flex SDK and the ArcGIS API for Flex to build mobile applications for Blackberry, Android, and iOS devices. Several people came by with new iPads and showed us some great Flex apps. The interest in mobile was more popular than expected at this year’s conference, possibly due to the fact we showcased it in several Technical Workshops. Below is a basic example of the ArcGIS API for Flex running as a native application on an iPad 2.

ArcGIS Runtime SDK for iOS Update 2.2.1 now available
This update contains a minor fix to the SDK installer. The v2.2 installer was unnecessarily laying down files related to ArcGIS Project Templates for XCode. As many of you might recall, these templates were deprecated and removed back at v2.1.
In majority of the cases, the laying down of these template files did not cause any harm. However, in exceptional cases, users were not able to install the v2.2 SDK due to permission issues related to where the files were being written. Even worse, the templates were being recognized by XCode giving users the false impression that ArcGIS project templates were still available and supported in v2.2. We would like to clarify that these templates are legacy, left over from the pre-v2.1 days.
The 2.2.1 installer has been fixed to not lay down the templates. There is no change to the API or the functionality.

- and much more…
You can refer to the documentation for more information about these improvments and how to migrate your existing applications to the new SDK.

We will soon make the iOS application that was shown in the plenary and tech sessions available as a sample on the resource center. We hope to see you again at this year’s User Conference in San Diego.

Dealing with dependencies in ArcGIS Android projects and ADT v17
Revision 17 of the Android SDK and Eclipse ADT Plugin includes major changes to the dependency management of Android projects and will break existing ArcGIS Android SDK projects. The reason for this is Android projects in Eclipse no longer adds dependencies from User Variables. Since this is a deployment issue in our design you may not at first recognize the issue as your projects will not show any problems. When you attempt to deploy your project from within Eclipse or as an exported APK file you will notice your app crashes. Fortunately there is a simple fix:
- Click on your ArcGIS for Android project
- Select Properties
- Select Java Build Path
- Select Order and Export
- Check all the ARCGIS_FOR_ANDROID resources
Here is a screenshot of how the Order and Export tab should look.
Now you just need to update your project to r17 specs.
- Click on your ArcGIS for Android project
- Select Android Tools > Fix Project Properties
That’s it, your app should now work as expected. We are working to address this in our upcoming release of the ArcGIS Runtime SDK for Android v1.1 expected in couple of weeks.

Welcome to the new unified ArcGIS Blog
For the past few years the various ArcGIS product development teams have hosted a few dozen separate blogs covering the width of the ArcGIS system. Now we have pulled those together into a single ArcGIS Blog so that you can more easily browse, subscribe to, learn from, and stay up-to-speed on the latest information from all our engineers and developers. In addition, the single blog reflects ArcGIS as a system and allows us to better tell big picture implementation stories that we couldn’t in the fragmented system.
If you do want to narrow your focus, just click a Category (under Technical Communities and Industry Communities) or Tag to see the posts for that particular area. You should find a category or tag that matches up with the subject area for each of the old separate blogs. A few may have been overlooked or thought to be unnecessary. We appreciate your feedback on specific categories or tags that should be added to help focus in on subject matter that is of interest to you. Continue reading
