The Ocean Basemap map service was recently updated to include bathymetric data from the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research (NIWA) in New Zealand. NIWA is a Crown Research Institute established in 1992 to conduct leading environmental science to enable the sustainable management of natural resources for New Zealand and the planet. Their purpose is to enhance the economic value and sustainable management of New Zealand’s aquatic resources and environments, to provide understanding of climate and the atmosphere and increase resilience to weather and climate hazards to improve the safety and wellbeing of New Zealanders. The New Zealand grid covers the the country’s exclusive economic zone, and is represented in the Ocean Basemap beginning at ~ 1:4.6m scale down to ~1:72k. The new update of the Ocean Basemap also includes various feature corrections, improved rendering of the bathymetric data, and minor design changes to fonts for feature names.
