With the release of ArcGIS 10.1 available, I am sure many of you are wondering about the compatibility of the mosaic dataset in the new version, and its backwards-compatibility to the previous version.
A mosaic dataset that was created in ArcGIS 10.0 can be read in ArcGIS 10.1, but it cannot be edited. If you wish to edit the mosaic dataset, you can use the Upgrade Dataset tool to upgrade your data to be compatible with 10.1.
A mosaic dataset that was created in ArcGIS 10.1 can be read and modified within 10.1. However it cannot be used at all in ArcGIS 10.0. If you plan on reading your mosaic dataset in both 10.0 and 10.1, then it is better to leave your mosaic dataset as a 10.0 version since both versions can still read it. If you plan on editing your mosaic dataset it is probably best to edit it in 10.0, and then you can read it from either version. Or you can just keep both a 10.0 and a 10.1 version of your mosaic dataset.
Below is a chart that summarizes the compatibility between versions.

I can not read a mosaic dataset in 10.1. The mosaic dataset was made with 9.3 or 10.0. I can load it into ArcMap or ArcCatalog. I see the mosaic-boundaries and there is no error message, but I don’t see the orthophoto – even if I zoom in. In 10.0 it’s not necessary to zoom or to configure something. I simply load the mosaic dataset from ArcCatalog in ArcMap and the orthophoto is drwan in ArcMap 10.0. What’s wrong? Any idea?
Hi Petra,
Without seeing your actual mosaic dataset, it is a bit difficult to trouble-shoot. Here are a few questions though that will hopefully help us:
- Are you using 10.1 final or 10.1 beta? There was an issue at some point in the beta process with the compatibility.
- Did you upgrade your previous machine, or did you simply install 10.1 on a new machine?
– if you used a new machine, can you check to make sure that the mosaic dataset was using UNC paths, rather than a local path? (try using the Repair tool – http://resources.arcgis.com/en/help/main/10.1/index.html#//009t0000005n000000)
- Did you run the analyzer tool to see what the issue might be? (http://resources.arcgis.com/en/help/main/10.1/index.html#//001700000158000000)
- if neither of those help, then please contact Esri Support.
Thank you!

Hello Simon,
Can we publish Mosaic Dataset created in ArcGIS 10 into ArcGIS10.1 Image Server ?
If we plan to upgrade our Mosaic Dataset from 10 to 10.1 and then publish into 10.1 Image Server . Can the users using ArcGIS 10 Desktop use the image service ?
Thanks for you help
Hi Simon,
the mosaic dataset.
thank for your help! I’m using 10.1 final and I upgraded my previous machine from 10.0 to 10.1. With your hint (using UNC paths) I solved the problem: After the new installation I had to reconnect to all my folders. And I did the reconnect a bit deeper inside the path of the folder than I used to do this in former times. With the Repair-Tool I recogniced, that I was using absolute paths and I changed them to UNC Paths and now I can load and see
Thank you!
