Doing more with ArcGIS Online groups

Groups are an effective way to organize your maps and apps and collaborate with others. With the June 2012 release of ArcGIS Online group capabilities have been enhanced to enable you to embed group items or share them via a configurable gallery application. We’ll take a closer look at these new capabilities, and how you can use them to easily share your maps and apps in new and different ways.

Sharing groups

Any group can be shared by using the URL generated in Link to this group:

Note that if your group is not public, those attempting to view it will be prompted to login and must be group members to access it.

Embedding group items

Group items can be embedded in a gallery by choosing Embed in Website:

You can choose from a variety of different options that enable you to control the layout of the gallery (ribbon or matrix) to display your group contents. The HTML for embedding is automatically generated based on your chosen layout, and you can also choose how maps are opened. Just copy and paste the HTML into the desired place in your Web page.

Gallery applications

Group sharing also includes a choice of two gallery options that you can use as hosted applications from your ArcGIS Online account, or you can download the source to modify and publish them from your own server. Options include the Map Carousel and Public Gallery. Click the thumbnail to preview how your group will look in the template, then choose Download or Publish as desired.

The Map Carousel is ideal for displaying map layers you have in your group. Each map layer found will be presented in the carousel; to move to the next or go back, just click the arrows on either side of the map. Click the thumbnail preview to see a gallery of available layers that you can choose to open.

The Public Gallery can be used as a hosted configurable application, or can be downloaded. To publish as a hosted app choose Publish. Then choose Configure App from the item details to specify your color scheme, display options for items, logo, and more.

These new capabilities offer new ways to share your maps and apps, and let you create custom layouts for widespread use. For more information see the Sharing groups help topic.
