Displaying a gallery of web maps

Have you been busy creating web maps on ArcGIS Online or your Portal for ArcGIS? If so, you are likely in need of an easy to use presentation layer to showcase your collection of maps. A brand new feature of ArcGIS Online is the ability to share an entire group of items in an easy-to-reference web page. Today, I’d like to introduce one of the templates you can apply to this page.

The Public Gallery template allows users to get an overview of your available maps and choose the ones they want to explore. It was inspired by the popular Public Maps Gallery template that you may have already been using, and has been implemented as an official template on ArcGIS Online.

Like other ArcGIS Online templates, you can download, modify and host the Public Gallery on your own server, but the easiest way is to configure and host it on ArcGIS Online. Just open your group page and click the Share button to create your own gallery.  See Sharing groups to learn more about this.

The Public Maps Gallery template uses the ArcGIS API for JavaScript along with HTML5 and CSS. The template comes with three ready to use color themes and the foundation for you to develop your own themes to match your company brand.

The new template contains several enhancements beyond the original Public Maps Gallery sample, including:

  • Full localization including support for right-to-left languages such as Arabic.
  • Seamless integration with ArcGIS Online as well as organizational portals.
  • Full support for Dojo 1.7 and the new ArcGIS Portal API.

A readme is included with the download. See the readme.html for instructions on running the template on your web server.
