ArcGIS Online was recently updated with the following new features and improvements:
The following are enhancements and improvements for the ArcGIS.com map viewer.

Spatial search when adding layers
The ArcGIS.com map viewer now returns search results for layers in ArcGIS Online based on the current extent of your map. For example, if you are zoomed to Nevada your search results will be ordered and based on your map extent, and changing your map extent to Pennsylvania may/will return different results (depending on your keywords). All layers that overlap your current map extent (and match your keywords) are returned. See Adding data layers to web maps for more information.
Adding CSV and text files via URL
The ArcGIS.com map viewer now supports adding CSV and text file layers referenced via a URL that contain lat/long coordinates. Each time the map is opened the data will be refreshed from the URL, so your map will be updated with the latest information. With this release ArcGIS Explorer Online also supports these same capabilities. See Adding data layers to web maps for more information.
Secure ArcGIS services
The ArcGIS.com map viewer now supports adding secure ArcGIS service layers from the web. When adding secure services you will be prompted for the user name and password. Users of your map will also be prompted for the user name and password for those layers, and if not provided those layers will not be displayed in the map. See Adding data layers to web maps for more information.
Enhanced options for modifying symbols
When changing symbols on a map, you can now flip colors, set the outline, and use a slider to set the minimum and maximum size of a symbol. See Displaying features for more information.

Optional editing for imported features
Editing features added from a shapefile, CSV, or delimited text file is now disabled by default. There is an option in the layer properties to enable editing. See Adding features from a file for more information.
Enhanced HTML5 support
The map display uses HTML5 CSS3 capabilities that use acceleration when available. When enabled, you will see fading effects when zooming.
This release also includes other usability enhancements and bug fixes. For more information see the What’s New help topic.
The following are enhancements and improvements for ArcGIS Explorer Online.

KML Support
You can now add KML layers and KML services to your map from ArcGIS Online items. KML support includes placemarks, ground overlays, time-enabled KML layers, network links, and refresh by time interval and after navigation. These capabilities have been supported in the ArcGIS.com map viewer since July, and are now supported in Explorer Online.
Adding CSV and text files via URL
Like the ArcGIS.com map viewer, ArcGIS Explorer Online also supports adding CSV and text files referenced via a URL that contain lat/long coordinates. Every time the map is opened the data will be refreshed from the URL, so your map will be updated with the latest information.

Enhanced sharing
You can now more easily access the sharing settings of a map using the Share links shown next to all items in the home screen, and the Share button in the Mapping toolbar. Explorer Online will now warn you if you attempt to copy a link to an item that may not be visible to all users. You can also share public items that you do not own within groups you own or within which you are a member.
Improved map authoring using keyword symbol search
In addition to browsing for symbols, you can now search for point symbols using keywords, enabling you to quickly find the desired symbol when authoring your map.
Filtering search results
When you perform a search in the home screen or the Add Content drop-down panel, you can now filter the results to see only results from your own content, from the groups of which you are a member, or from a specific group.
This release also includes other usability enhancements and bug fixes. For more information see the What’s New help topic for Explorer Online.
ArcGIS Online subscriptions
An ArcGIS Online subscription lets you manage your geospatial assets and publish maps and data to the cloud. Over the next few weeks the ArcGIS 10.1 beta community is now invited to join the beta testing program for ArcGIS Online subscriptions. See the Esri beta site for information on the beta program, and What’s new in subscriptions for more information on these new features.
Improved support for adding members
Administrators can now create accounts for members and add them to the organization by uploading a CSV file. See Adding users for more information.
Secure Socket Layer (SSL) support
A new option allows access to the organization through SSL only. See Customizing the website for more information.
Custom URL for your organization site
Organizations can create their own URL for their geoportal. Anonymous access can be allowed so the organization portal can be used for public access. See Customizing the website for more information.
Enhanced status reports
A new Status page shows your storage, usage, and account capacity. See Viewing subscription status for more information.
Thanks for you interest and support. We’re looking forward to your using these new features and capabilities. Stay tuned to the blog, many of these will be detailed in future posts along with other tips, updates, and announcements.
