The world's first GeoDesign Summit, taking place January 6–8, 2010, at ESRI headquarters in Redlands, California, will explore pairing GIS technology and design. Geospatial thinkers across disciplines are encouraged to attend.

The 2009 UC theme was GIS—Designing Our Future. The concept of geodesign means to bring geographic analysis into a design planning process, when initial design sketches are evaluated against spatial data. Land-use and transportation planners, engineers, and others who use location information can benefit from this strong design framework. The resulting designs more closely follow natural systems, which benefits both people and nature and makes for a more synergistic coexistence.

"Geodesign really is like playing a video game to prototype the redesign of a city," says ESRI president Jack Dangermond. "The summit will advance this simple yet powerful concept that proposes we turn our napkin sketches into dynamic, robust applications that can be useful and available to everyone."
