GIS Coordinates Information to Assist 100,000 Displaced People in Indonesian Flash Floods
Almost two years to the day of the anniversary for the devastating Indian Ocean tsunami, another disaster struck the Province of Aceh on Sumatra, Indonesia. December 27, 2006 ushered in a flash flood affecting six districts in East Aceh, destroying buildings, infrastructure, and displacing 100,000 people.
GIS is instrumental in the emergency response. The Rehabilitation and Reconstruction Agency (BRR) of the Indonesian Government is creating and delivering maps to the response team to assist with coordinating logistics, and assessing flood casualties, and damage to buildings and infrastructure.
BRR's GIS group, the Spatial Information & Mapping Centre (SIM-Centre), is coordinating with Satkorlak, the Indonesian coordination unit for emergency response, the Office of the United Nations Recovery Coordinator for Aceh and Nias (UNORC), and the Indonesian Red Cross (PMI).
SIM-Centre continues to update maps and disseminate information as the emergency continues.
