ArcGIS Server 9.3 Enterprise to support new 64-bit platforms

ArcSDE 9.3 64-bit support has been announced on the ESRI support page. Here are the details:

ESRI is pleased to announce the availability of ArcSDE 9.3 with new native 64-bit support for Oracle® 10g & 11g, and Microsoft® SQL Server® on the following platforms: Windows, Red Hat® Enterprise Linux® 4 & 5, and SUSE® 10 Enterprise Linux from Novell®. US based customers who are under maintenance can request a DVD from ESRI Customer Service. International Customers please contact your local distributor. Please note that these new platforms have been built on the ArcGIS 9.3 Service Pack 1 source code.

Hi Brendan,

I was to see this announcement but apart from the announcement there appears to be little other info on esri site re benefits that this will actual provide (other than the assumed 64-bit performance enhancement?).  Is there any further info, benefits, test results etc as to why it would be considered in your design to move towards the 64-bit architecture when the remainder of the AGS app still remains 32-bit.  Is there any roadmap for this full transition?

Hi Brad,

There are really three main advantages:

1 - A native 64-bit ESRI Spatial Type library is now available for customers that require SQL access to their spatial features

2 - A native 64-bit application can take advantage of additional memory that 64-bit servers and operating system can support, which can improve performance if performance was being impaired by lack of memory. It should also be noted that memory constraints can also be resolved by moving from an ArcSDE application server to direct connections (see our earlier post on direct connections).

3 - Oracle does not support 32-bit applications being installed on the same 64-bit Linux server with 64-bit Oracle. Therefore Linux based customers can now move to this implementation pattern and have the ArcSDE application server installed on the same server as their 64-bit Oracle DBMS.

Hope this helps,

-Brent

Hi,

is this means we can install directly ArcSDE 9.3 on oracle 64 bit database. Currently we need to use 32 bit oracle client to talk between sde and 64 bit oracle database.

Vijay,

Yes that's one of the advantages of support for 64-bit platforms.

I'm running SLES 10, 64 bit.

Is there support for 64 bit PostgreSQL or do I need to install 32 bit PostgreSQL?

Has anything changed in this regard with the 9.3.1 release?

hawatson,

Currently 9.3 and 9.3.1 only supports 32 bit PostgreSQL. That being said we do plan supporting 64 bit PostgreSQL at 9.4.

The best place to go fo all support/platform questions is here:

Hope this helps,
